Social Commentary: ‘Gangnam Style’

By: Gabriela Yareliz

I am a big fan of music that makes some sort of political statement or commentary. It turns out the ‘Gangnam Style’ revolution is really deeper than a good dance song. I am not partial to the song, but the article I read about it count my interest. (What am I doing reading articles when I have civil procedure to be reading?)

I read an article from the San Francisco Gate which you can read here that explains how this area was an area with very little to appeal to others, and now it is an area in Seoul where 1% lives and an apartment can cost you about %700,000. Incredible.

So… this dance hit with weird, weird dance moves and blond Asian women it isn’t empty (not completely).

The following is from Wikipedia (yes, it has its own page):

[Psy likened Gangnam District to Beverly Hills, California, and said in an interview that he intended a twisted sense of humor by claiming himself to be “Gangnam Style” when everything about the song, dance, looks, and the music video is far from being such a high class.[14]In another interview with CNN, PSY added that:

“People who are actually from Gangnam never proclaim that they are — it’s only the posers and wannabes that put on these airs and say that they are “Gangnam Style” — so this song is actually poking fun at those kinds of people who are trying so hard to be something that they’re not.”]
He has done a pretty good job of spreading the message, and his dance moves definitely poke some fun at the airs.
