This Month’s Picks: July 2014

[Change ‘medical school’ to ‘law school’ and her face to mine. The struggle is real.]

By: Gabriela Yareliz

“We’re almost there and nowhere near it. All that matters is we’re going.”

— Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls.

Oh July! Why is it that I feel more disciplined during the semester as opposed to during summer? (I am laughing as I say this because we all know how law school semesters go). School is coming. As we enjoy the last month of summer, let’s embrace it with everything it has for us. 😉

1] Recreational Reading

Now is the time for rec. reading before the semester enslaves us all to our textbooks:

Latino Americans, Ray Suarez

Hard Choices, Hillary Rodham Clinton

A Philosophy of Walking, Frederic Gros

An Unexpected Guest, Anne Korkeakivi

2]

From: Peace is Every Step, by Thich Nhat Hanh

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”

“Every step makes a flower bloom under our feet. We can do it only if we do not think of the future or the past, if we know that life can only be found in the present moment.”

3]

4]

5] Anger. We all need to learn how to deal with it.

“We know that anger can be a kind of compost, and that it is within its power to give birth to something beautiful.”– Thich Nhat Hanh

6] This is how it’s done

7] Pigeons in New York are flying mighty low

Dear Pigeons,

You flew into my friend’s face. You have almost gotten tangled with my hair. Please add a couple more feet of altitude to your flight path. Please don’t launch yourselves at us from fences and sidewalks in a slow way when we are right in front of you. Some are scared of your parasites and grayness. I think you are cute, but I don’t want you in my face.

Love,

Gabby

PS. To the pigeons who lived in the window across the way from mine, I am sorry the temple put spikes where you used to frolic. I miss you and your coos, terribly.

Cute children's book that I would totally buy.

8] Feminine products

Men don’t know what it’s like to walk through a store with feminine products and be stared down. When you pay, you double bag it, but then at the intersection, while waiting to cross a handsome fellow looks at you across the street. He looks down at the bag, and then looks back up at your face. Then, you realize that both bags are transparent, so it doesn’t matter that you double bagged. He saw the brand; he saw everything. Well, that was fun.

9] Dear Abby was on point this month:

Dear Abby: I am a young woman hoping to find “The One.” But I have come to realize I’m not the normal female. I don’t get manicures or go shopping. (I hate shopping!) When I meet a guy, he likes that I’m “me,” but if we get serious, then I’m either “too independent,” “too outspoken” or “not girly enough.”

I don’t want to change myself or pretend to be someone I’m not. One minute they like that I’m independent and can fend for myself; the next they don’t like that I don’t depend on them to pay bills, etc.

Why is it always a double standard? Men like strong women until they are with one. Then they can’t handle it. Maybe I’m too much for the men where I live. Is it possible for me to find someone?

— Independent Female In Louisiana

Dear Independent Female: Welcome to the wonderful world of dating. While some may think of dating as a popularity contest, it’s really more like sifting for a gold nugget. It takes a lot of people years to strike gold — and it’s the same with dating. Is it possible to find someone? Absolutely! But it takes time, stamina and a sense of humor to survive the process.”

The struggle is real. [The phrase of the summer]

10] Candidly Nicole: Because life is comedy.

I have always been a fan of Nicole Richie. She is a bit crazy, sometimes a little vulgar, but she is honest and has the right amount of attitude. I have loved watching her go from crazy socialite to entrepreneur hilarious mother over the years. She’s back.

11] Speaking of Nicole Richie, her husband just came out with a new song. That is right, after a long break the Madden Brothers are back! I don’t remember hearing these guys since junior high. I love their new song. This is how you do a comeback.

12] These two having another kid.

13] My last year of law school is soon to begin.

14] Many of us are having Mindy Kaling comedy withdraws (she says out loud what has crossed all of our minds). Proof that the working life (life post-student life) can be fun.

15] A little Bridgitte Bardot for the summer soul (the song and inspiration for late summer Miss Dior Cherie by Sofia Coppola)

16] The turbans should be worn (on Alia Bhatt)

17] Sonam Kapoor is RETRO

18] Princess Diaries

I approve. I approve of Fawad Khan. I approve of Sonam’s pom-pom hat and her large mischievous eyes.

Khoobsurat. Check out the trailer:

It will probably be fantastic.
