The Widow: “Shall Not God Avenge His Own?”

Compiled by: Gabriela Yareliz

From: Ellen G. White’s Christ Object Lessons

“Christ had been speaking of the period just before His second coming, and of the perils through which His followers must pass. With special reference to that time He related the parable “to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”

“There was in a city,” He said, “a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man; and there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge His own elect, which cry day and night unto Him, though He bear long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.”

The judge who is here pictured had no regard for right,

nor pity for suffering. The widow who pressed her case before him was persistently repulsed. Again and again she came to him, only to be treated with contempt, and to be driven from the judgment seat. The judge knew that her cause was righteous, and he could have relieved her at once, but he would not. He wanted to show his arbitrary power, and it gratified him to let her ask and plead and entreat in vain. But she would not fail nor become discouraged. Notwithstanding his indifference and hardheartedness, she pressed her petition until the judge consented to attend to her case. “Though I fear not God, nor regard man,” he said, “yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.” To save his reputation, to avoid giving publicity to his partial, one-sided judgment, he avenged the persevering woman.

“And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge His own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though He bear long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily.” Christ here draws a sharp contrast between the unjust judge and God. The judge yielded to the widow’s request merely through selfishness, that he might be relieved of her importunity. He felt for her no pity or compassion; her misery was nothing to him. How different is the attitude of God toward those who seek Him. The appeals of the needy and distressed are considered by Him with infinite compassion.

The woman who entreated the judge for justice had lost her husband by death. Poor and friendless, she had no means of retrieving her ruined fortunes. So by sin, man lost his connection with God. Of himself he has no means of salvation. But in Christ we are brought nigh unto the Father. The elect of God are dear to His heart. They are those whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light, to show forth His praise, to shine as lights

amid the darkness of the world. The unjust judge had no special interest in the widow who importuned him for deliverance; yet in order to rid himself of her pitiful appeals, he heard her plea, and delivered her from her adversary. But God loves His children with infinite love. To Him the dearest object on earth is His church.

“For the Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the lot of His inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste, howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye.” Deut. 32:9, 10. “For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory hath He sent Me unto the nations which spoiled you; for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of His eye.” Zech. 2:8.”

The Prayer of FrançoisVillon

By: Gabriela Yareliz

Lyrics and music by B. Okudzhava

As long as the world’s still turning,

As long as the air’s still sweet, Lord, won’t you give to all of us

Whatever it is we need.

Give a mind to the wise one,

A shield to the enemy,

Give some gold to the happy man,

And don’t forget about me.

As long as the world’s still turning, Lord, if it be your will,

Give to the hungry for power

A kingdom to rule his fill.

Give some rest to the generous

Under a shady tree,

Wash the stain from the face of Cain,

And don’t forget about me.

I know that your powers are wondrous,

I believe that your ways are wise,

The way that a fallen soldier

Believes he’s in paradise,

The way every breathing being

Believes in your gentle word,

The way, in our utter oblivion,

We keep on believing, oh Lord.

My all-wise, my all-merciful,

My sweet Lord of sea-green eyes,

As long as the world’s still turning

To its eternal surprise,

As long as it still has plenty of Fire and destiny,

Give a little to everyone,

And don’t forget about me.

“Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you’re right and you know it, speak your mind. Speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth.”–Mohandas Ghandi

“Truth by definition excludes.”  ―    Ravi Zacharias

“Time is the brush of God, as he paints his masterpiece on the heart of humanity.”  ― Ravi Zacharias

“I remember the time an older man asked me when I was young, “Do you know what you are doing now?” I thought it was some kind of trick question. “Tell me,” I said. You are building your memories,” he replied, “so make them good ones.”  ―    Ravi Zacharias

Fear Not

By: Gabriela Yareliz

“But now thus says the Lord that created you, O Jacob, and formed you, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you: and through the rivers, they will not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, neither will flame kindle upon you, for I am the Lord you God, the Holy One…” Isaiah 43:1-3

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely  for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commended His love toward us that, while we were yet sinners and in rebellion toward God, Christ died for us.” Romans 5: 6-8 Emphasis added.

Know today, that God loves you and you are precious in His sight. Know that He has promised to be with us always. Know that through our weakness we are strong through Him. That while we would rarely die for a good man, He gave us His and paid the ultimate price and took the ultimate risk, dying for us while we were in sin, so that through Him we could be reconciled to Him.

Fear not. One has already given so much for you, will never forsake you.

The Island

By:Gabriela Yareliz

Today, I spent time on an island off of Manhattan. It was pleasant. The breeze was soft, the sunshine was on and making my face feel warm and alive. This was a nice contrast to the NY I have known so far. The church organized a picnic there. There were some rickshaw looking things, and a man told us they were free so four of us got in one and peddled down the path for 5 min. and then back and an angry family was waiting for us. Turns out they aren’t free and we were unintentional bike-jackers. Terrible. So we stole the cart. On ACCIDENT! The husabnd seemed amused, the wife– not so much. we just test drove it, and the man said it was FREE. Never listen to strangers.

When I was coming back, I was suffocating in a woman’s perfume. It was terrible. Today, I wore my Spain jersey. Hilariously enough, I met a Spanish family on the subway freaking out because they were lost, and when they saw me in my shirt they found solace and their countenances lit up. Not even a shirt is a coincidence sometimes.

I wanted to mention that I am shocked at how unmanly guys can be. I am not just talking about the fact that they might wear shirts and pants waaay too tight for their own good and oversized thick framed glasses– I am talking about guys who fail to be gentlemen, and they are selfish, just thinking of themselves. Like they want you to take a train when dark and then walk alone. WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT? He has got to be OUT of his MIND. DENIED.

Crazy people.

I don’t know who is worse… the freaks that want to rape or mug you or the ones who want you to expose yourself to that.

Time for Civil Procedure! YES. Statutes here I come.

THE END.

Memorable remark from a pastor and his loss-stricken heart

By: Gabriela Yareliz

Today, I heard a testimony of a young pastor whose wife recently passed away. They weren’t even married much beyond their first year, I believe. Her strength and faith, and his peace and love have captivated many hearts. Something he shared today (quote from memory):

“I have not and will not, ever, doubt the goodness of God.”

That is so powerful coming from someone who just lost the person they love.

It reminded me of Job. Job, no matter how bad things got for him, he could never doubt God or curse Him, because he had experienced Him.

Despite the suffering sin and selfishness create in this world and the injustices our fallen humanity encounters: God is love; God is goodness; God is God.

UNdaunted

By: Gabriela Yareliz

I heard the testimony of this woman, who goes from small beginnings (like finding out she is adopted at 33 years old and feeling unwanted) to becoming a hero for saving young women from human trafficking and sexual slavery. Her name is Christine Caine. God has blessed her with a meaningful ministry. So often, we confuse sympathy with compassion. It is time for action and to do something for someone else.

Please take the time to listen to her powerful and short message (15 min.) You won’t regret it.
