Exam Period Picks II

By: Gabriela Yareliz

Just got out of another exam. I am brain dead. Con Law II is done. One more to go. I walked to Nolita afterward for the Em Cosmetics Pop-up Shop. I saw and said hello to Michelle Phan. She is the sweetest person! Truly. A brilliant artist. I walked in 25 degree weather to see a makeup artist. I know. That is true passion for the art.

Anyway…usually after exams, I go window shopping. It’s too cold for that–I guess Nolita was my trip of the day. Now, it’s time for pretty pictures and downtime in my warm abode.

Aprendiz de Moccia: H y Gin-tonic

By: Gabriela Yareliz

English: (Non-American films are so much deeper…they linger)

This film… I don’t know, it left me enchanted. I saw it last May. It’s a sad movie. It’s not a fairy tale. It’s a story about mature love. It has to do with the past, the future, and most of all, it’s about working for the present. It’s about the pain we often carry inside. In life, we see a bit of everything; those who are selfish, those who care about nothing, those who care about everything, those who put in the effort, and those who know nothing is impossible.

There aren’t always happy endings where all are unscathed, but our endings are up to us.
The things that are worth anything in life are not easy. I know you know this–but sometimes it needs to be repeated. This love story (Tengo Ganas De Ti by Federico Moccia [book and film]) lives in my mind and heart.

It fills me with nostalgia…but at the same time it gives me faith and reminds me that all things are possible.

Women Speak

By: Gabriela Yareliz

Below is a piece by an honest Rega Jha, and a video showing how women were represented in the media this year. We still have a long way to go.

This was a moving piece.

Going along with the thought of how women are treated, perceived and represented:

When you engage in an argument with a man, it’s true that often you are seen as hysterical or someone ends up calling you “cute.” This video did the current state of affairs a lot of justice.

MANDELA

Nelson Mandela has passed away.
There are no words; except that he was a man of God, and he had true character. Very few writings and lives have moved me the way his have.

“There is a universal respect and even admiration for those who are humble and simple by nature, and who have absolute confidence in all human beings irrespective of their social status.”
― Nelson Mandela, Conversations With Myself

He was one of those people.

His life taught that forgiveness is the most powerful weapon that disarms others, and it liberates the soul. He taught equality and dignity. He taught reconciliation. He taught perseverance.

And even from his prison cell, he lived free.

“YO SOY LIBRE, COMO MANDELA.”-Rene, Calle 13, La Perla
